Concorde Therapy Group has developed women’s health programs to meet the unique needs of women of all ages and stages of life. These includes pelvic pain and/or pelvic floor dysfunction, pregnancy related issues such as leg and back pain, post-surgical rehabilitation and incontinence training. Myofascial release is one technique used to treat these diagnoses.
Myofascial release is a gentle technique that mobilizes the dysfunctional fascia of the pelvis and pelvic floor. Treatment is done internally and externally for optimal relief and correction of dysfunction. In addition to treating pelvic pain, myofascial release is used to treat menstrual dysfunction, painful intercourse, and constipation.
This technique is also effective for the treatment of post-surgical issues from abdominal and/or pelvic surgery, as well as breast cancer/mastectomy surgery.
Another common problem that myofascial release can effectively treat is urinary stress, urge, or mixed incontinence. Fascial restrictions from trauma, scars and/or pregnancy can exert pressure upon the bladder creating these problems.
Patients who present with pelvic pain receive a private evaluation by a physical therapist with specialized training in treating the muscles of the pelvic floor. The therapist will use safe and non-invasive treatments such as pelvic floor relaxation training, biofeedback and electric stimulation. Additionally, external manual treatment techniques such as myofascial release are useful in addressing symptoms associated with pelvic pain.
Concorde Therapy Group treats women during pregnancy, as well as after childbirth. Pregnancy related issues such as leg and back pain, sciatic nerve problems or excessive swelling can limit the ability of the mother-to-be to enjoy each stage of her pregnancy. We focus our treatment on the management of back, hip and leg pain with techniques that are safe for mother and baby, such as posture education, strengthening, manual therapy and maternity supports. Post-pregnancy treatment is often necessary to continue strengthening muscles affected during pregnancy and address post-surgical issues.
Rehabilitation following surgery focuses on a personalized plan to achieve each patient’s goals. Areas treated include abdominal surgery, such as cesarean and hysterectomy, as well as breast cancer surgery. Rehabilitation may include myofascial release to address scar management as well as treatment to strengthen back, abdominal and pelvic muscles. The Concorde team includes physical and occupational therapists offering lymphedema management following breast cancer treatment such as mastectomy or radiation.
Physical therapy for urinary incontinence is designed to help women regain control of their bladders and improve their quality of life. Many women are bothered by urinary leakage/incontinence and urgency or excessive frequency. Concorde provides individualized treatment to meet each women’s specific needs and may include simple dietary changes, myofascial release, bladder training, pelvic muscle strengthening, and use of biofeedback and/or electrical stimulation.
